Ingredients:

  • 2 slices Sprouted grain bread or sourdough
  • 1 tsp Light grass-fed butter
  • 3 oz Extra-lean deli ham (97% fat-free)
  • 1 slice Sharp White Cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 4 thin slices Granny Smith apple

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the cast iron pie iron over campfire coals or a stove for 2 minutes per side to ensure a hot start for the Maillard reaction.
  2. Lightly coat the outside of the bread slices or the inside of the preheated iron with the light grass-fed butter.
  3. Place the first slice of bread butter-side-down into the iron and spread Dijon mustard on the upward-facing side.
  4. Layer the extra-lean ham, sharp white cheddar, and Granny Smith apple slices onto the bread.
  5. Place the second slice of bread on top, butter-side-up, and close the iron, latching the handles securely. Trim any excess bread sticking out to prevent it from burning.
  6. Place the iron directly on hot coals (avoid high flames) for 3-4 minutes per side until the exterior is a deep, crackling golden brown.
